The purpose of The Medical Ethics Resource Network (MERN) of Michigan is to advance the development of biomedical ethics by:
- Sharing resources and information among members via the MERN Newsletter and Webpage.
- Providing speakers, educational programs, and educational resources to health care facilities, educational institutions and public groups.
- Encouraging research related to biomedical ethics.
- Advancing the development of institutional ethics committees.
- Engaging in other activities calculated to strengthen and widen the state of interest and expertise in medical ethics.
MERN is designed to meet the needs of a diverse membership, and is organized exclusively for educational, scientific and charitable purposes as a not-for-profit organization. MERN will not, as an organization, endorse positions on public policy issues.
Philosophy and Purpose: MERN differs from some existing networks in being open to anyone with an interest in ethics instead of being restricted to special audiences. A primary goal of the network is to promote closer collaboration between members who work in hospital or other health care settings and those who work in academic settings. By having a forum for sharing information and educational opportunities, MERN members will be able to coordinate efforts and form special interest groups when appropriate, thus avoiding unnecessary duplication of effort and building a network which represents a wide range of expertise.
